Why Date Night Matters: Keeping Romance, Intimacy and Passion Alive

ADVANCE MINDS • October 28, 2026

How making time for each other can help couples reconnect, bring back playfulness and keep the relationship alive.

You can share a home, a bed and a busy calendar, yet realise you have barely spent time together as a couple.

Conversations become about work, bills, children and tomorrow’s responsibilities. You still care about each other, but romance keeps being postponed.

Date night is one way to give your relationship some deliberate attention. It creates an opportunity to enjoy the person beside you, show affection and make room for the romantic and sexual connection you both want.

Make time to feel like a couple again

Being in the same room does not always mean spending meaningful time together. A date gives you a chance to put distractions aside and become curious about each other again.

Relationships Australia Victoria recommends preserving enjoyable shared rituals and creating new ones. A regular date can become one of those rituals, whether it is dinner out or a quiet evening at home.

Ask something beyond the usual daily updates:

* What have you been looking forward to lately?

* What is something you would love us to do together?

* When do you feel most appreciated by me?

Listen without rushing to fix, correct or defend. Leave room for laughter and stories, too.

Bring romance into the small moments

Romance can be a thoughtful invitation, a sincere compliment or remembering something your partner enjoys. It does not need to depend on expensive gifts.

For your next date, consider choosing music you both love, revisiting a meaningful place or dressing up because you enjoy making an effort for each other.

Ask your partner what feels romantic to them. Your answers may be different.

A useful question is: What would help you feel that this time together matters?

Add some spice through playfulness

Spicing up your relationship can begin with doing something outside your usual routine.

Take turns planning a small surprise within an agreed budget. Choose a dance class, try a new recipe, explore a different neighbourhood or make a playlist for an evening together.

You could recreate an early date and talk about what first attracted you to each other. Or plan something neither of you has tried.

Choose activities you both feel comfortable with. The aim is to enjoy discovering something together, with room for humour if the plan does not go perfectly.

Make room for romance and sex

Sex can be a valued part of a relationship, and it deserves a conversation alongside time, affection and companionship. Relationships Australia WA encourages couples to make time for sexual intimacy and discuss their sexual needs outside the bedroom.

A date can create an opportunity to slow down and talk about what you each enjoy. Ask what helps your partner feel close, what kind of affection they welcome and whether there is anything they would like to explore together.

Desire does not always appear at the same moment for both partners. Stress, fatigue, conflict and a lack of privacy can affect it. Sometimes the most useful first step is easing those pressures rather than planning a more elaborate romantic evening.

Keep intimacy freely chosen

A romantic dinner, thoughtful gift or planned evening never creates an obligation to have sex. Consent is needed every time, including within marriage, and either person can change their mind.

Agree that affection can remain affection. A kiss, cuddle or shared evening can be worthwhile without progressing further.

There is no set amount of sex that every couple needs. Focus on whether both of you feel heard, respected and comfortable with your intimate life.

Choose a date that fits your life

Date night does not have to happen at night. Try breakfast together, a picnic, a daytime walk or dessert after the children are asleep.

For a simple start:

1. Choose a realistic time and agree on the budget.

2. Share the planning and practical arrangements.

3. Put phones aside where possible.

4. Ask each other what you enjoyed afterwards.

A short date you can manage may be more useful than an ambitious plan you keep postponing. If something interrupts it, choose another time together.

Give the relationship attention between dates

Use date night as a starting point for everyday care. Make a habit of greeting each other warmly, expressing appreciation and following through on agreed responsibilities.

If resentment or repeated arguments keep overshadowing your time together, those concerns also deserve attention. One evening cannot carry all the work of repairing a relationship.
